Analysis

好きにならないで

好き is the na-adjective meaning “likeable”, に is the target particle and ならない is the nai-form of the verb なる meaning “to become”.

Na-adjective such as 静か (quiet), 元気 (cheerful) and so on, followed by になる is used when the state becomes different so 静かになる means “to become quiet” and 元気になる means “to become cheerful”. And 好きになる is used when you start to like someone so it can be translated as “to fall in love”.

And a verb nai-form followed by で is used to ask someone not to do something in casual speech.

So 好きにならないで means “Don’t fall in love with me”.

もしそうなっても気のせいだよ

A verb te-form followed by も means “even if” and もし at the beginning of a sentence is used to emphasize that it’s based on the speaker’s hypothesis.

そう (adverb) is used to avoid repeating a phrase mentioned earlier which is in this case 好きに, and なって is the te-form of なる.

So もしそうなっても is equivalent to もし好きになっても meaning “even if you fall in love with me”.

気のせい (noun) literally means “because of mind” which can be translated as “one’s imagination” or “not real”.

Analysis

The grammar is “A に B はいらない” meaning “B is not necessary for A”.

The A is 別れ meaning “farewells” and the B is 多くの言葉 meaning “many words” (多くの followed by a noun means “many”. In daily conversation たくさんの is commonly used as 多くの sounds formal and non-colloquial in this usage. 言葉 means “words”).

The sentence ending particle さ is usually used by optimistic or snobbish men to make the speech sound cool, dry and frank. The most famous anime character who often uses this is Kazuhiko Hanawa from anime series “Chibi Maruko Chan”.

So 別れに多くの言葉はいらないさ means “You don’t need many words for farewells” in a cool way.

Analysis

常に means “always”. You can also say いつも instead but 常に sounds a bit more formal. In many cases, 常に and いつも are interchangeable, but there are times when you can only use いつも. It is when talking about a habit that takes place on a regular basis in a certain condition.

胸を張って means “proudly” or “confidently”. 胸を張る is a verb literally meaning “to push your chest out” which makes you look confident and this te-form of the verb means “in a certain state”.

生きろ is the imperative form of 生きる meaning “to live”. This form is used to give an order or command to people in a lower status or equal in male speech.

Examples

常に/いつも (always)

常つねに健康けんこうに気きを使つかっている。

tsune ni kenkō ni ki o tsukatte iru.

I always take care of my health.

あの二人ふたりはいつも一緒いっしょにいる。

ano futari wa itsumo issho ni iru.

Analysis

おにいさまができたみたいでとてもうれしかったですわ

おにいさま means “older brother” in a very formal way.

ができた is the past tense of ができる meaning “to get or gain something” when something comes into existence. It is different from the one with the meaning “to be able to do”.

みたい means “like” or “as if”.

This で means “because” or ”as” which links two sentences. The first sentence presents a cause or reason and the second sentence presents the consequence resulted by the cause.

とても means “very”.

うれしかったです is the past tense of うれしいです meaning “to be happy”.

わ adds feminine flavour to the sentence which is often used in anime.

あんたらをここでころさせやしない

あんたら is the plural of あんた meaning “you” in a casual way.

ここで means “here”.

ころさせる is the causative form of the verb ころす meaning “to kill”. AにBをころさせる means “let A kill B” and the A is カイナッツォ who is trying to kill them and the B is あんたら. So it actually means “let Cagnazzo kill you all” but Cagnazzo is omitted here so it means “let you all die”.

A stem of the verb + やしない or はしない means “won’t”. It expresses the speaker’s stronger will not to do something compared to the simple ない form.

Ryu’s Quote

Japanese: 昇龍拳を破らぬ限り、お前に勝ち目はない。
Romaji: shoryuken o yaburanu kagiri, omae ni kachime wa nai.
English: You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

Analysis

昇龍拳 (shoryuken) as you know is the name of the move but it is “rising dragon fist” if translated directly.

A negative verb conjugation + 限り means “unless”, and the negative verb conjugation here is ぬ which is the same as ない in an old-fashioned and classical way. You often hear it in samurai movies.

勝ち目 means “a chance of winning”.

So it means “unless you defeat the shoryuken, you won’t stand a chance of winning”.

However, let’s look at the sentence in the English version.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

So this phrase suggests that there is a person called Sheng Long and that the opponent must be able to defeat Sheng Long first before being able to stand a chance against Ryu.

Did you notice? According to the Japanese version, Sheng Long was not a person but is actually just referring to the shoryuken, the move that defeated Sagat.

I can explain how this mistake could have happened. Sheng Long is actually the Chinese pronunciation for the kanji of shoryuken without the Ken. Whoever translated the script probably did not know that shoryuken was a move so it was translated as a name in Chinese.

Despite the error though, rumours of Sheng Long became so big that it got into western game magazines and it even got the attention from Capcom at one stage. This mistake probably did take part in making the game a bigger hit in the western world and so in the end, I think it was ok that it was translated to “you must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance”.

Examples

〜ない + 限り (unless)

雨あめが降ふらない限かぎり、試合しあいは決行けっこうします。

ame ga furanai kagiri shiai wa kekkō shimasu.

The match will be carried out unless it rains.

彼かれが謝あやまらない限かぎり、二度にどと話はなさない。

kare ga ayamaranai kagiri nido to hanasanai.

I will never talk to him again unless he apologises to me.

宿題しゅくだいを終おわらせない限かぎり、おやつをあげません。

shukudai o owarasenai kagiri, oyatsu o agemasen.

勝ち目 (a chance of winning)

この勝負しょうぶ、勝かち目めは五分五分ごぶごぶだ。

For this match, the chance of winning is fifty-fifty.

That guy is too strong. I definitely won’t stand a chance.
