Japanese: まっすぐ自分の言葉は曲げねぇ。それが俺の忍道だ!
Romaji: massugu jibun no kotoba wa magenē. sore ga ore no nindō da!
English: I never go back on my words. That’s my ninja way!

Analysis

まっすぐ自分の言葉は曲げねぇ

まっすぐ (adverb) means “straight”.

自分の言葉 (pronoun + particle + noun) means “my words”.
自分 indicates the speaker Naruto himself and の is the possessive particle so 自分の means “my” and 言葉 means “words”.

は (particle) is the topic particle showing the preceding word is the topic of the sentence.

曲げねぇ (verb) means “not bend”. It’s the contracted form of 曲げない which is the nai-form or negative-form of 曲げる. It’s a transitive verb which requires an object followed by the を particle so “something を曲げる” means “to bend something”. When the object is “one’s belief, opinion, word, will, decision, and so on”, it means “go back on something” or “take something back”.

So 自分の言葉を曲げる means “go back on my words” or “take back my words”. So it’s actually 自分の言葉「を」曲げねぇ but Naruto says 自分の言葉「は」曲げねぇ. を is replaced with は to turn the object into the topic of the sentence. The direct translation would be “as for my words, I won’t take them back”. The meaning is pretty much the same but the object is highlighted by using the は particle.

So まっすぐ自分の言葉は曲げねぇ means “I won’t take back my words”, “I never go back on my words”, or “I keep my words straight”.

Suggested Quote with まっすぐ

Killua’s Quote “Gon, You Are Light”

それが俺の忍道だ

それ (pronoun) means “it” or “that” indicating the previous statement, so it indicates まっすぐ自分の言葉は曲げねぇ.

が (particle) shows the preceding word is the subject. When it’s used in the sentence like “Noun A が Noun Bだ” it sounds like “nothing else but Noun A is Noun B” so it’s very exclusive.

俺の忍道 (pronoun + particle + noun) means “my ninja way”.
俺 is the first person pronoun usually used by men and の is the possessive particle so 俺の means “my” and 忍道 means “ninja way”. It’s a personal rule that each ninja lives by, their way of living as a ninja, their motto or belief.

だ (auxiliary verb) is used to affirm what the speaker said.

So それが俺の忍道だ means “that is my ninja way”.

NOTE

Difference between 自分 and 俺

自分 is a reflective pronoun which refers back to a person in the context. It’s often translated as “oneself” for the first, second and third-person pronoun. In this case, the whole original sentence is 俺はまっすぐ自分の言葉を曲げねぇ so 自分 is referring back to 俺 which is Naruto. If he said 俺はまっすぐ俺の言葉を曲げねぇ, it sounds somewhat redundant.

On the other hand, 俺 simply indicates the first-person “I”. The sentence それが俺の忍道だ has nobody to be referred back to so there’s no need to use 自分.

So when there’s somebody to be referred back to, you use 自分, and when there isn’t, you use the first person pronoun. The same rule applies for the second person pronoun and third person pronoun.

Japanese: 火影になる奴に近道はねぇし、なった奴に逃げ道はねぇよ！
Romaji: hokage ni naru yatsu ni chikamichi wa nē shi, natta yatsu ni nigemichi wa nē yo!
English: There are no shortcuts to becoming Hokage and there is no way out once you become one!

Analysis

The sentence is a bit long but the structure is quite simple. It’s one sentence that consists of two clauses connected with the conjunction particle し meaning “and”. And both clauses have the grammar “Noun A に Noun B はない”. ねぇ is the broken version of ない meaning “nonexistent” so it means “A has no B”.

So the structure of this sentence is simply “A has no B and C has no D”.

火影になる奴に近道はねぇ

Noun A: 火影になる奴

火影 literally means Fire Shadow which is a word that only exists in the Naruto world. It’s the highest class of ninja and often the strongest, representing the Konoha village.

Something になる means “to become something”. So 火影になる means “become Hokage” and it modifies the following noun 奴 which is a rough way of saying 人 meaning “a person”.

So 火影になる奴 can be translated as “One who becomes Hokage”.

Noun B: 近道

Each kanji means “close” and “path” so it means “shortcut”.

So the first clause 火影になる奴に近道はねぇ means “One who becomes Hokage has no shortcut”.

なった奴に逃げ道はねぇ

Noun C: なった奴

なった is the ta-form of なる and it modifies the following noun 奴 so it means “one who has become”. 火影に is omitted this time to avoid redundancy.

Noun D: 逃げ道

It literally means “runaway” “path” so it means “way out”.

So the second clause なった奴に逃げ道はねぇ means “One who has become (Hokage) has no way out”.

よ is the sentence ending particle used to make the listener become aware of what the speaker says.

Notice that a verb ta-form is often used to express the past tense but in this case, it doesn’t mean he’s talking about the past. The form of a verb can also express if an action is incomplete or complete at a certain point of time.

So there is a point in time where someone becomes Hokage and 火影になる奴 indicates the one before that point where the action is incomplete, whereas 火影になった奴 indicates the one after that point where the action is complete.

So he’s simply saying that until you become Hokage there are no shortcuts, and once you’ve become Hokage, there’s no way out.

In this quote, Obito mentions “shortcuts” (近道) and Naruto responds to the word, so 近道 is the topic of the sentence and Naruto is emphasising there is NO (ない) such thing (strong negation).

If they are talking about one who becomes Hokage, and Naruto only gives Obito information about it, it could be 火影になる奴には近道がない (火影になる奴に = topic, 近道がない = information).

Itachi’s Quote

Japanese: 俺のことをずっと許さなくていい。お前がこれからどうなろうと、俺はお前をずっと愛している。
Romaji: ore no koto o zutto yurusanakute ii. omae ga korekara dō narō to, ore wa omae o zutto aishiteiru.
English: You don’t ever have to forgive me. No matter what you decide to do from now, I will love you forever.

Analysis

俺のことをずっと許さなくていい。

俺 is a manly way to say “I or me”.

The particle の followed by こと means “about”, so 俺のこと means “about me”.

The を particle indicates the direct object of the following verb.

ずっと means “for a long time”, “all along”, or “forever” which is used when something is in the same state continuously.

許さなくていい is formed with the verb 許す meaning “forgive” and なくていい meaning “don’t have to”. So you use the nai-form of a verb, delete the い and add くていい to mean “don’t have to do something”. For example, “don’t have to go” – the nai-form of the verb “行く” is 行かない so it’s 行かなくていい. “don’t have to come” – the nai-form of the verb “来る” is 来ない so it’s 来なくていい.

お前がこれからどうなろうと、俺はお前をずっと愛している。

The first clause お前がこれからどうなろうと is the subordinate clause which is “Aが どう + a verb volitional form + と” meaning “no matter how A does something”.

The A is お前 meaning “you”, which can be used towards inferiors or equals in a manly and friendly way.

これから means “from now on”.

なろう is the volitional form of なる meaning “to become or change” so “No matter how you change from now on”. In the anime it’s translated to “No matter what you decide to do” or “no matter what happens to you”.

And the second clause 俺はお前をずっと愛している is the main clause which is A は B を愛している meaning “A loves B” so 俺 (I) はお前 (you) をずっと (forever) 愛している means “I will love you forever”.

Japanese: 仲間一人救えねぇ奴が火影になんてなれるかよ。
Romaji: nakama hitori sukuenee yatsu ga hokage ni nante nareru ka yo.
English: How can a guy who can’t save one friend become Hokage?

Analysis

仲間 means “a friend” who shares the same goal or destiny and work together in a group or organisation.

一人 means “one person”.

救えねぇ is a rough way to say 救えない meaning “can’t save”.

奴 means “a fellow” or “a guy”. So 仲間一人救えねぇ奴 means “a guy who can’t save one friend”.

が is a subject marker which is often mixed up with a topic marker は. There are several rules about が and は but basically “が” is used to emphasise what comes before and “は” is used to emphasise what comes after. For example, for the sentence “Naruto is eating ramen” if you say ナルトがラーメンを食べている it implies the one who is eating ramen is Naruto, not anyone else. So the question for this answer would be “誰がラーメンを食べている？” (WHO is eating ramen?) On the other hand, if you say ナルトはラーメンを食べている Naruto is just a topic of the sentence and the important part is his action “to be eating ramen”. So the question for this answer would be “ナルトは何をしている？” (WHAT is Naruto DOING?)

火影 literally means “Fire Shadow” which is a word that only exists in the Naruto world. It’s the highest class of ninja and often the strongest, representing the Konoha village.

A noun + the target particle に + なる means “to become something” and the potential form of なる is なれる. So 火影になれる means “can become Hokage”.

なんて emphasises the word or sentence which comes before and usually expresses negative feelings of the speaker such as disgust, disbelief, belittling and so on. So Naruto is saying that there is no point in becoming Hokage if he can’t save his friend.

This か is used for a rhetorical question which is a question that you ask without expecting an answer. It’s used to make a point, to persuade or for literary effect. So Naruto is strongly persuading Kakashi that it’s impossible for him to become Hokage without saving his friend by using a rhetorical question.

This よ is simply used to emphasise his opinion and emotion in order to make listeners aware of it.
