Examples
わざわざ (adv. “taking the trouble”)

You don’t have to come all the way to school to pick me up.
人気のラーメンを食べるためにわざわざ来たのに、今日は休業日だった。
I came all the way to eat the popular ramen but the restaurant was closed today.
Difference between わざわざ and せっかく both meaning “taking the trouble of doing something”:
- わざわざ – emphasises the fact that someone has gone out of their way to do something
- せっかく – emphasises appreciation of someone’s effort or implies that the speaker thinks the opportunity is desirable
わざわざ家まで来てくれたのに、出かけててごめん。
Sorry for being away even though you came all the way to my place.
せっかく家まで来てくれたのに、出かけててごめん。
Sorry for being away even though you came all the way to my place (and I regret that I missed the opportunity).
せっかく (
わざわざ) たくさん雪が積もったんだから、かまくらを作ろう。Since we got a lot of snow, we might as well make an igloo (as it’s a good opportunity).
わざわざ (
せっかく) ここに来てくれてありがとう。Thanks for coming all the way here.
*As you are appreciating the listener, you want to emphasise the trouble that the listener might have taken.
In the examples, only the third one can be replaced with せっかく as eating the popular ramen is the opportunity that the speaker desired:
人気のラーメンを食べるためにせっかく来たのに、今日は休業日だった。
I came all the way to eat the popular ramen but the restaurant was closed today (and I am so upset that I missed the opportunity).
よく (used sarcastically when criticising someone’s action)
ご飯食べながらよくスプラッター映画見れるね。
How can you watch splatter films while eating food.
私によくそんなことが言えるね。
How dare you say such a thing to me?
あんないじわるされてよく平気でいられるね。
How can you remain calm after being bullied like that.
Verb Masu Stem + そう (look like it’s about to/going to …)
あ、ジャケットのボタンが取れそうだよ！(1)
Oh, the jacket button looks like it’s going to come off!
泣きそうな顔してる女の子がいた。(2)
There was a girl who looked like she was about to cry.
まだ春なのにもう暑い。今年の夏は暑くなりそうだな。(3)
It’s still spring but it’s already hot. This summer looks like it might get hot.
It can be used both when you look at something and instinctively guess what’s going to happen next (example 1 & 2) and when you look/hear/feel and assume what is likely going to happen in the future (example 3) .
